Gmail Not Updating On iPhone: 6 Useful Methods To Fix

September 28, 2022 by davidmr Leave a Comment

Gmail not updating on iPhone causes inconveniences for busy bees. How to get over it? Our Trustguide team provides up to six solutions for your preference. Try them one by one until you fix the error. Don’t worry, as they do not take much time.

Gmail Not Updating On iPhone: Root Causes

Security is the main cause of your problem. In simple terms, Google prevents synchronization when it discovers a new location. The server believes a possible break-in has occurred.

Some other possibilities that may become an obstacle to the smooth operation of your application include:

  • Disconnect from the Internet or mobile data
  • Improper server settings
  • Disable IMAP
  • Outdated Gmail version

These listed problems come with the solutions below. In the worst scenario, the data transfer in the backend suffers from failure causing the application to crash. You have no choice but to wait.

Solution #1: Turn On Gmail Sync

The Android operating system pre-installs Gmail as the default mail client. However, you must check if it is enabled on your iPhone. Here is how to do it:

  • Step 1: Access Settings on your phone
  • Step 2: Look for Mail and click on it

  • Step 3: Head to Account, and all mail accounts available on your device will appear
  • Step 4: Tap on one to open the options window. In the Mail, turn the switch to green
  • Step 5: Close the task and return to the application to see the result.

Solution #2: Configure The Fetch New Data

Once you add Gmail to your smartphone, it connects to the server and syncs. If you do not receive a new notification, data fetching may have been disabled. Check this issue by following these actions:

  • Step 1: Navigate to Settings
  • Step 2: Go to Mail > Accounts options as in the first method
  • Step 3: Choose Fetch New Data under the Accounts box

  • Step 4: Tap on your account and select Fetch. Afterward, click on Automatically in the schedule to ensure Gmail is always up to date with the latest information.

Note: This action may reduce battery life. Apple recommends fetching as little as possible.

Solution #3: Enable IMAP

Another disabled action that may disrupt Gmail operations is IMAP. Follow the instructions below to resolve:

  • Step 1: Sign in to Gmail with your account
  • Step 2: In the upper right corner, find the Gear icon and tap on it to open Settings
  • Step 3: Go for Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  • Step 4: In the IMAP Access section, make sure that Enable IMAP is selected.

Solution #4: Restart Mail Application

The ongoing process may suffer from system errors that fail to sync Gmail. Hence, a fresh start can solve problems in a split second. It would help to perform the setup as follows:

  • Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of the home screen and hold to open the list of background apps.
  • Step 2: Find out Mail windows and swipe up to delete. This action will force the current operation to stop.
  • Step 3: Re-access the application and see whether the problem is gone.

Solution #5: Re-login To Your Account

If all of the above does not work for you, the cause may come from Gmail itself. Delete the current account to remove the previous configurations and re-add the ID for better results. Here is how to proceed with this method:

Stage 1: Remove Gmail account

  • Step 1: Follow Settings > Password & Account command. You may also do Settings > Mail > Account instead
  • Step 2: Tap on your ID and choose the Delete Account option
  • Step 3: Confirm your task one more time to complete.

Stage 2: Reinstall

  • Step 1: Launch Settings and access to Mail
  • Step 2: Select Add Account
  • Step 3: Pick out Google as your email service
  • Step 4: Choose the Continue option in the pop-up message
  • Step 5: Enter your ID and password to log in
  • Step 6: Check the following conditions to ensure the valid installation

Type: IMAP

Hostname: imap.gmail.com

Username: your complete and correct address

Outgoing service: smtp.gmail.com

Solution #6: Check For New iOS Version

An outdated operating system, including Mail, can miss the latest security updates and application enhancements. Upgrade to a new iOS version with these efforts:

  • Step 1: Proceed to Settings
  • Step 2: Select General after scrolling down
  • Step 3: Click on Software Update
  • Step 4: If the display signals a new version, download it. The installation takes place automatically after that.

Conclusion

Gmail not updating on iPhone is no longer a concern with these solutions above. If you prefer a different mail client software and experience the same error, the troubleshooting may be similar. Above all, remember to turn on the network connection and turn off the low power mode.
